Predictability

Last week witnessed the closure of many roads in town that caused a traffic chaos. On Tuesday, I had fetched my girlfriend to work, and took a cab to my office in Suntec, only to find myself reaching after 40 minutes of confusion, where otherwise would take 10 minutes on a normal day. It was a horrible jam, as my cab tried to reach my destination through high street, then beach road and finally dropped me off at Raffles Hotel where I hurried back to work. And that totally pointless drive cost me $17.50!

The next day was a stark contrast to the traffic condition of the prior day. The road traffic was smooth but the human traffic was stifling. Singapore seem to have a very predictable mentality. We seem to always want to beat the mass, stay ahead. If there is a jam, we want to go earlier, if there is a sale we want to buy earlier, if there is a problem we want to 'siam' earlier. But nowadays it's not good enough to think ahead one step, we need to think what others will think of to stay ahead, in order for us to be ahead. That's kiasuism.
